Disney’s Newsies, based on the 1992 motion picture, features a score by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and a book by four-time Tony Award® winner Harvey Fierstein. Newsies is inspired by the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899, when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of orphan and runaway “newsies” on a two-week-long action against Pulitzer, Hearst, and other powerful newspaper publishers. Timely and fresh, the fictionalized adaptation of Newsies addresses age-old themes of social injustice, exploitative labor practices, and David-versus-Goliath struggles as the young learn to harness their power against a corrupt establishment. High-energy with non-stop thrills, the stage version introduces eight brand-new songs by the original team of Menken and Feldman while keeping many of the beloved songs from the film, including “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” “King of New York,” and “Santa Fe.”

Design Concept
Newsies is most apparently a show about the struggle between the working and ruling classes. The reality of many newsies was a constant result of their direct exploitation and ensuing misery. Despite this, some managed to remain hopeful, most notably, Jack Kelly. For one to lead a group of young people through these difficult times in their lives, they must not only possess the qualities of a good leader, but be able to instill in them hope; hope for anything beyond just mere survival. Jack constantly dreamt of Santa Fe, but in the end gave it up to be with Katherine and those who he loved most. He is an outlier whose spirit I chose to capture in my design, by prioritizing the use of bold colors and landscapes to encapsulate the world he strives to create, while still maintaining the given setting and details of the world.
In collaboration with Elijah Bault, we chose to heavily incorporate historical imagery and research into our design, primarily through the use of and content within the newspapers/headlines throughout. I incorporated these into my portion of the design, the backdrops, by adding text from articles about the real life Newsboy Strike of 1899 and the Trolley Strike that came just before.
The composition of the three buildings in the foreground were based on images of 19th century tenements. The skyline is an imagined combination of random nonexistent buildings, the New York World Building, and the Brooklyn Bridge, with the latter two and aforementioned text serving as subtle details for an observant audience. My use of deeply saturated colors is in service of reflecting Jack’s idealization.
Pulitzer’s Office features a silhouetted window from which the Brooklyn Bridge as drawn in the skyline can be seen. I chose to compose these scenes in this way both to enhance the scenery but also to create the illusion of his office “looking down” on the newsies and their lives. All of these elements are original illustrations and animations, which further work to visualize Jack’s yearning for a brighter future as representations of things that are just outside of our reality yet just in reach for someone bold enough to try.
