Disney’s Newsies, based on the 1992 motion picture, features a score by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and a book by four-time Tony Award® winner Harvey Fierstein. Newsies is inspired by the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899, when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of orphan and runaway “newsies” on a two-week-long action against Pulitzer, Hearst, and other powerful newspaper publishers. Timely and fresh, the fictionalized adaptation of Newsies addresses age-old themes of social injustice, exploitative labor practices, and David-versus-Goliath struggles as the young learn to harness their power against a corrupt establishment. High-energy with non-stop thrills, the stage version introduces eight brand-new songs by the original team of Menken and Feldman while keeping many of the beloved songs from the film, including “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” “King of New York,” and “Santa Fe.”

Samples From Annotated Script
A condition of me working on this show as a recently graduated Senior was that I use it as an opportunity to train a new Engineer. With this in mind, I had to be sure my approach wouldn't exceed their abilities while still stretching my own capabilities (at the time). To do this, I programmed the show using over 170 scenes that would crossfade between each other with the press of a button, largely automating elements of line-by-line mixing, making the large ensemble numbers especially smooth for both of us.

Integration With Projection
As I was also a projection designer for this production, in addition to Elijah Bault, sound was closely integrated into the projection design. I added foley SFX to this media by mixing samples of stock effects with my own recordings. In this example, two pieces of the shutter sound from the camera flash are a recording of me tapping a metal bottle and a recording of my own camera's shutter sound, which were mixed with other sounds such as an umbrella opening to create the final result.

Watch What Happens
As Katherine returns to her office to write her story about the Newsies and their struggles, she finds herself unsure what to write. As she sings, the words begin to come to her, and she finds inspiration in drawing parallels between the Newsies and Pulitzer to David and Goliath. For this scene I sampled existing stock typewriter sounds and then spliced and mixed them to match the timing and typed dialog of what she writes, which was broken up into multiple cues throughout.

Vocal FX
At the end of King of New York the energy in the room was massive. In an attempt to take this to the next level, I decided to create a trailing reverb effect on the entire cast at the end of the song. I did this by programming the Vox DCAs to be up and the FX return down, then crossfading to a scene where this was inverted. The result was a massive sound that really brought the end of the song to life. To hear a sample of this mix, email colbya7426@gmail.com.
